It is a morning ritual around the world. Each day, millions of people get their says started with a cup of coffee. 1. Drinking coffee can improve your intellect. Everyone knows that coffee will give you an energy boost. What may be new is what good coffee and tea can be for your brain power. Once the caffeine from your beverage gets to your brain, it keeps your body from releasing adenosine, a powerful inhibitory neurotransmitter. When that happens, dopamine and norepinephrine flood through the brain. This causes an increase in neural activity. This causes an improvement of the mood, memory, reaction time and overall cognitive ability.
  2. Caffeine can help you lose weight. There is a lot of hype out there around substances and compounds that are supposed to help people lose body fat but caffeine actually lives up to it. Drinking specialty coffee can increase a person’s metabolism by between 3% and 11%. Some data have shown that far burning can be increased by as much as 10% in people who are obese and up to 19% in people who are not. The only drawback is coffee seems to have less of an impact on people who drink it a lot and for a long time.
  3. Coffee is packed with important nutrition. Here is another reason to have office coffee cups around for staff to enjoy. It has been reported that coffee is packed with nutrients that we all need. For example, one cup of joe has the following:
    • 11% of the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin).
    • 6% of the RDA for Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid ).
    • 3% of the RDA for Potassium and Manganese.
    • 2% of the RDA for Niacin (Vitamin B3) and Magnesium.
  4. Drinking coffee lowers your chances of developing diabetes. This is a serious problem for a large number of people across the planet. It has been estimated that nearly 300 million people suffer from this disease. People who drink coffee on a regular basis cut their risk of developing this serious condition by 67%.
  5. Drinking coffee can also protect you from Alzheimer’s disease as well as other forms of dementia. People over the age of 65 are more at risk for developing these neurological problems and there is no cure. However, coffee has been shown to be somewhat effective in protecting the brain from damage. Research has shown that people who drink coffee regularly can cut their risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by 65%. This may be because of how caffeine increases the release of dopamine.
  6. People’s risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. The second leading neurological condition that impacts people around the globe is Parkinson’s disease. When the neurons in the brain that produce dopamine die, the result is the development of Parkinson’s Disease. People who drink coffee have a chance of developing this devastating condition by between 32% and 60%.
  7. Coffee drinkers are happier. The people you see grabbing office cups of coffee are the happier ones in the office. Women who consume at least four cups of coffee every day reduce their risk of developing depression by 20%, according to the Harvard Medical School. People are also 53% less likely to have suicidal tendencies.
  8. Drinking coffee can protect the liver. The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. When we drink coffee, we lower the chances that the liver will develop cirrhosis by a whopping 80%. Coffee can also protect people from fatty liver disease, hepatitis and other problems.

People like to joke about people gathering around the water cooler or grabbing office coffee cups but offering those office coffee cups may be one of the best thing employers can do for their workers.
